What Roku's built-in controls can and can't do
Roku includes some useful parental controls. ScreenWarden adds the time limits and bedtimes they don't cover.
| Feature | Roku's built-in controls | ScreenWarden |
|---|---|---|
| PIN for purchases and new channels | Yes | Use Roku's PIN for this |
| Content rating limits (The Roku Channel, Howdy) | Yes | Not covered |
| Choose which apps a child can open | Yes, with Kid & Teen Mode (participating apps only) | Yes, any app, set per TV |
| Daily time limit for a specific app | No | Yes |
| Recurring nightly bedtime | No (a one-time sleep timer, Roku TVs only) | Yes, on Roku TVs and players |
| Where it runs | On the Roku itself | Your Windows PC, which must be on and awake |
ScreenWarden works alongside Roku's own controls, so use both. Why limits matter: what the research says about children's screen time.

Frequently asked questions
Can't find your answer? Email help@screenwarden.app.
Which versions of Windows are supported?
ScreenWarden for Roku runs on Windows 10 (version 1809 or later) and Windows 11.
Does the PC need to stay on?
Yes. ScreenWarden runs on your Windows PC, not on the Roku, so rules and schedules are only enforced while the PC is on, awake, and on the same network as your Roku devices. It keeps working from the system tray when its window is closed, and it can start automatically with Windows.
Which Roku devices does it work with?
Roku TVs and Roku players that are on your local network. Bedtime can power a Roku TV off completely. Roku streaming sticks and boxes can't be powered off remotely, so they are returned to the home screen if an app is opened during bedtime hours.
What happens if a Roku's address changes?
ScreenWarden tracks each device by its serial number and re-finds it if your router hands it a new address. For the most reliable results, give each Roku a DHCP reservation in your router. See Devices in the how-to guide.
Where is my data stored, and is anything sent online?
Everything is stored locally on your PC, in your Windows user profile. ScreenWarden only communicates with the Roku devices on your own network. It has no accounts, no ads and no analytics. See the Privacy Policy.
How do I install and update the app?
Install ScreenWarden for Roku from the Microsoft Store. It costs $9.99, and you can try it free for 7 days first. The Store keeps the app up to date automatically.
